3D Innovations Assists with Design of Electronic Shark Defense System (ESDS) device

The collaboration between Z to A Innovation, LLC and 3D Innovations have delivered the ESDS to market. The ESDS is a small, shark deterrent device that repels sharks from the area while in the ocean thus, increasing the user’s safety. The ESDS sends pulses through the water that are easily detected by a shark’s sensory system, causing them to stay out of the signal range while keeping ocean enthusiasts safe from encounters with sharks. The device is attached by a strap, similar to surfboard or stand up paddle board leash to the ankle. When the ESDS senses water, it turns on automatically and can last up to 9 hours before recharging. The device only measures 2.6 x 2.3 x 1.0 inches and weighs about seven ounces.

What's Happening At 3D Innovations?

3D Innovations continues participation as a DT Coach for community projects.

Begining in October, 3D Innovations began the start of a 6-8 month project to help the Castle Complex in their redesign efforts.

The Castle Complex has failed to meet National and State academic standards for the past 8 years, and has until June 2012 to complete a redesign plan that is accepted by the Department of Education to turn around their outcomes. If they fail to do so, an out of state management team will take over the complex and come up with their own redesign plan.

The Design Thinking team seeks to improve the students’ levels of engagement, achievement, and reduce dropout rates. The “DT” team is working closely with the Castle Complex Area Superintendent Lea Albert to launch the ‘Castle Complex Redesign Initiative’.

3D Innovations/3D Academy continues support as a Design Thinking Coach for the Castle Complex Redesign Initiative.

The most critical aspect of designing and implementing the Castle Complex Redesign Plan is to ensure student achievement scores improve to meet national and state standards, while engaging all stakeholders in community building around the schools in an accelerated manner. With the requirement of significantly raising academic test scores, the Redesign Plan must address (a) the lack of cohesion between elementary and middle and high school curricula, and (b) the gap between standard test scores and those of the middle and high school students, while (c) establishing broad community support for the Redesign effort.
Given the short timeframe available to accomplish this effort, the Project and Process Managers have identified the Design Thinking process to align user needs with required outcomes and to accelerate the stakeholder engagement process. This methodology begins with identifying user needs through the following steps of Empathy, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.

Additional workshops will be held to help educators integrate this problem solving process into curriculum and STEM based programs.
