Popular 3D Printing & STEM Education News (June 10th – June 14th)

It’s Friday and you know what that means…it’s time for your weekly 3D Printing and STEM education news roundup! This week in the ever growing world of 3D printing the “big” news is that Amazon has now entered the playing field (please see below for a couple articles related to this business move). In the realm of STEM education, we really found the article Engineering students want jobs at NASA, Google, Boeing, Apple and Microsoft — in that order very intriguing and it gives you real insight into the frame of mind of our engineering students and what really inspires them.

On a side note, we would like to thank everyone that made it out to our second Product Design and Development Seminar on Monday, June 10th in Honolulu at the Manoa Innovation Center! We had a wonderful time sharing information and meeting everyone!

Q&A Session: Prototyping, Product Design, 3D Printing & Much More…

“Don’t make assumptions. Find the courage to ask questions.” – Miguel Angel Ruiz

As you know, last week and this week we held two Product Development and Design Seminars in Hawaii. We found that these were not only a great opportunity to get out into the community, but they also proved very useful to help entrepreneurs and small businesses get their engineering, manufacturing, prototyping, 3D CAD, additive manufacturing/3D printing, product design and development questions answered. This got us thinking, there must be many more people out there that are curious about all of these design aspects as well, but just do not have a resource in which to ask their questions… Well now you do!

Please feel free to e-mail info@3d-innovations.com with your questions, or post them as a comment on this blog post because chances are that if you have a question, someone out there has the same question! We truly love educating entrepreneurs and small business owners about all aspects of the product development life cycle, so that in the end you are able to make a clear and informed decision about the future of your product.

We will be focusing the discussion around accelerating your design project. Our CEO, Collin Kobayashi, will also share information about the following topics:

  • Learn about the Product Development process and steps to commercialize your products.
  • See what methods are most effective in streamlining the design process including design methods, visualization tools, prototyping techniques, and which manufacturing process would best fit your needs.
  • Hear about how 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing could benefit your projects and how to accelerate your schedule to meet production manufacturing requirements.

Here are the event details:

Date: Monday, June 10, 2013
Time: 10am – 11:30am
Location: Manoa Innovation Center, Innovation Lab, 2800 Woodlawn Dr. Suite 285,
Honolulu, HI 96822

Cost: $25/person, payable at the door (Cash and checks accepted). Free for MEDB, HTDC, and INNOVATE Hawaii clients
RSVP: info@innovatehawaii.org (Seating is limited)
*One-on-one meetings with 3D Innovations to follow each seminar – Contact us to reserve a spot!

Popular 3D Printing & STEM Education News (May 27th – May 31st)

Your weekly news roundup has arrived! This week there was a major buzz around the fact that the space station will be getting a 3D printer of its own in 2014. Shapeways has also developed a “squeezable” plastic 3D printing material–this could enhance prototyping capabilities even further in the near future. In the world of STEM, Lego is also working to make tinkering “cool” again for children and they have developed a very impressive R&D lab (How Lego Is Constructing the Next Generation of Engineers).

We highly suggest that you check out the  Wohler’s Associates and McKinsey reports related to 3D printing that were recently released. Both reports give some great information as to the current state of the industry and future economic and growth predictions.

Popular 3D Printing & STEM Education News (May 20th – May 24th)

Happy Friday! Below are some of the most talked about 3D printing and STEM education news articles this week. A news story that was not only heartwarming but inspiring this week is that of a little boy that had a plastic airway 3D printed for him (Doctors save little boy’s life by 3D printing tiny plastic airway for him in world first). 3D printing is making great advancements in medicine, and stories like this remind us of the potential of this type of technology.

Your weekly 3D printing and STEM education news roundup has arrived! Another busy week in the realm of 3D printing; one article we found very interesting was Harvard Robots are 3D Printed, Self-Assembling…It will be very interesting to watch this type of technology evolve. We would like to give a shout out to Miss Hawaii USA, Brianna Acosta, for proclaiming “I’m a robotics nerd” and for being such a public FIRST Robotics figure — Go STEM!

Happy Friday! Your weekly news roundup has arrived! In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, we would like to thank all of the hardworking educators out there making a difference in the lives of our youth. This week saw a lot of mixed press regarding 3D printing, and among all of the negativity we would like to point you to an inspiring article from Makerbot about the Robohand Project; it is wonderful to see 3D printing make such a positive impact on the lives of children and people in need.

The Magic of Robohand

This is just one of those news stories that leaves you inspired, and this is precisely why we wanted to share it with our 3D Innovations community.

Makerbot has released a video about how a group of hackers built 3D-printed hands for children and adults who are missing fingers or entire hands. The project aims to take the cost and complexity associated with hand prosthesis out of the process. It is working.

In short, the Robohand project is an effort to release the plans for a completely open-source, 3D-printable hand. The fingers close when the user bends his or her wrist and the parts can be printed on any 3D printer. It’s perfect for kids because, as they grow, caregivers can simply upgrade the hand with a few mouse clicks.

How Do I Get A Robohand? Robohand was not imagined as a service or a product. Instead, Richard has shared the design files and instructions for creating a Robohand on Thingiverse so that people around the world can download, customize, print, and assemble Robohands for themselves or for others.

Happy Friday! Below is a summary of the most talked about 3D Printing and STEM education news for the past week. Two 3D Printing stories really took off this week Scientists use 3D printer to create ‘bionic ear’ that hears better than you and GE Prepares to Test the Potential of Additive Manufacturing, so if you are short on time we highly recommend that you check out these two news bits. Regarding STEM, the Smithsonian came out with an interactive infographic in which you can follow the STEM education path from early childhood to workforce entry, and along the way you can see the benefits of a STEM education at the different stages Infographic: Where a STEM Education Can Take You (very cool!).
