Popular 3D Printing & STEM Education News (June 10th – June 14th)

It’s Friday and you know what that means…it’s time for your weekly 3D Printing and STEM education news roundup! This week in the ever growing world of 3D printing the “big” news is that Amazon has now entered the playing field (please see below for a couple articles related to this business move). In the realm of STEM education, we really found the article Engineering students want jobs at NASA, Google, Boeing, Apple and Microsoft — in that order very intriguing and it gives you real insight into the frame of mind of our engineering students and what really inspires them.

On a side note, we would like to thank everyone that made it out to our second Product Design and Development Seminar on Monday, June 10th in Honolulu at the Manoa Innovation Center! We had a wonderful time sharing information and meeting everyone!

Popular 3D Printing & STEM Education News (May 27th – May 31st)

Your weekly news roundup has arrived! This week there was a major buzz around the fact that the space station will be getting a 3D printer of its own in 2014. Shapeways has also developed a “squeezable” plastic 3D printing material–this could enhance prototyping capabilities even further in the near future. In the world of STEM, Lego is also working to make tinkering “cool” again for children and they have developed a very impressive R&D lab (How Lego Is Constructing the Next Generation of Engineers).

We highly suggest that you check out the  Wohler’s Associates and McKinsey reports related to 3D printing that were recently released. Both reports give some great information as to the current state of the industry and future economic and growth predictions.

Inspiring Students To Think About STEM

“Learning is not a spectator sport.” – D. Blocher

Throughout life we are each inspired by different things…some of us are inspired by a certain professor while others of us are inspired a quest for answers and knowledge…while our inspiration comes from different places, it instills in us a universal drive to succeed. We wanted to reach out to our parents, teachers and educators with this blog post to learn a bit as to how they work to inspire students. How do you light the inspiration spark in students? To take it a bit further, How do you inspire students in STEM fields?

We have come up with some ways in which we have seen students become inspired throughout their educational journey.

  1. Hands-on Activity: We have seen this time and time again, when students are able to actively participate in the classroom we see them become fully engaged with the material. Our educational company, 3D Academy, works with schools and after-school programs to provide interactive education opportunities with 3D CAD, prototyping and 3D printing and each time we actively engage with the students we see their eyes light up because we are using a teaching model that emphasizes trial-and-error rather than lectures.
  2. Field Trips: It is no secret that students love getting out of the classroom and exploring. Whether it is a class field trip or a family trip to the local science museum you see students learning and becoming inspired.
  3. Group Competitions: Robotics competitions are everywhere these days, and what is more powerful than coming together with fellow students to design and build an actual robot? Answer: Nothing. Students become inspired by seeing their work come to life and these kind of competitions often lead students into future STEM careers.
  4. Mentors: Mentoring a student is a very powerful way of helping them see the “cool” side of STEM careers. Having this one-on-one contact with a student allows them to get any questions they have answered and your influence might just be the inspiration they were needing.

Please leave a comment on this blog post with your own ideas about inspiring students, and we will grow the list together!

Happy Friday! Below are some of the most talked about 3D printing and STEM education news articles this week. A news story that was not only heartwarming but inspiring this week is that of a little boy that had a plastic airway 3D printed for him (Doctors save little boy’s life by 3D printing tiny plastic airway for him in world first). 3D printing is making great advancements in medicine, and stories like this remind us of the potential of this type of technology.
